So I quit my advertising job a couple of months back to take on some freelance work and see if I could make that go. And I guess it’s going. I’m working pretty much all the time and getting paid infrequently.
It’s a mix of interesting work that pays OK and uninteresting work that pays well. The interesting stuff; I’m completely in charge of, and if it goes over my time estimate I have to eat that. But basically it’s going well.
The idea is that I’ll soon have a good enough portfolio that I’ll get only interesting work that pays well, and I’ll teach somebody else to do all this CSS stuff. That’s the trim carpentry, and it’s great work (thanks Bill Gates for IE, you help so many front-enders make a living), but I’ve done it, and now I want to draw blueprints and swing a bigger hammer. Or use power tools, pick your metaphor.
Anyway, I haven’t posted much here since I’ve been working three jobs, got really exhausted and lost my health for about a week (still frightening subway riders with my cough from time to time) and finally said enough. I quit my “security” gig. It paid great, but I had to be on-site, the office was hot and loud, and I had to manage a Frankenstein site that was half Wordpress and half Joomla (don’t ever do Joomla). They made me a generous full-time offer, and they’re great people (plus I also learned a lot about Python/Django) but I really just want to be in control of my time.
It feels great, knowing I’ll probably be broke again soon. (Not really—I’ve got prospects.)
Anyway, in the middle of all this busyness, I noticed my rosebush bloomed on Wednesday. (I call it a rosebush, but I think it’s something else. If you know what it is tell me.)

I don’t actually have anything to say about writing Javascript late at night except that I just did a bunch of it; it’s five a.m. and I think I’m gonna stop for the night.
Some scribbles I made on my note paper while I was getting more or less frustrated.

(“Country Bearwhiz Beer” is a reference to a fake ad on the Firesign Theatre LP I was listening to.)

It’s finally springtime, people, time for daffodils and kites and lingering cold weather, but one thing springtime always means is Jimmy and The Wolfpack are gonna wake up from hibernation and write you an email reminding you that it’s spring! Time for daffodils, etc. Also, we’ll be appearing live at Parkside Lounge in Manhattan, NYC, Saturday night, May 21. Show starts at 9 p.m. We’ll be playing two sets, so be prepared to hear “The Doofus” and “I Love Music Mommy” and “Hot Nuts” and other songs that we used to play all the time. There will be special guests on this bill as well so either monitor the facebook page to see who it is or just come to the darn show and have fun with us. What does it take to get people out on a Saturday in the middle of May—free cannoli??!?

Because as soon as they do, somebody’s going to photoshop Lynndie England into them.

Another example of iTunes not letting me do something it easily could:
Rather than showing me the movies as a grid, with pictures, why can’t I see them as a list, which I could sort by age or file name?
I could see a lot more and make better, or at least quicker, decisions about what goes on my phone.

I did see the thing at the top that lets you select “x most recent unplayed films”, which is nice, but: what if that’s not what I want?
Apple’s usually great at helping you organize your files. iTunes syncing is quite the exception.
